The Lord, my Shepherd, brings me to a field<\/span>
\n<\/span>Where flocks that He has gathered safely graze<\/span>
\n<\/span>And eat the tender grass His servants raise,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Protected from gray jackals by His shield.<\/span>
\n<\/span>The Lord, my Shepherd, plays His flute, revealed<\/span>
\n<\/span>To those who seek the tune of faith and praise,<\/span>
\n<\/span>For when His flute is played, the heart obeys<\/span>
\n<\/span>The soul\u2019s most sacred yearnings, long concealed.<\/span>
\n<\/span>I shall not want, for God has taken me<\/span>
\n<\/span>To quiet, peaceful streams; and in this hour<\/span>
\n<\/span>Of overwhelming grace, His flute is heard.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My Shepherd is the Keeper of the inn<\/span>
\n<\/span>Who searches for His guests among the lame,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The faint, the stragglers who have walked with shame,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The mute, the maimed, the famished and the thin.<\/span>
\n<\/span>And every guest is treated like a king;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Within His inn, the water tastes like wine;<\/span>
\n<\/span>The fruit is picked from gardens in the east;<\/span>
\n<\/span>The bread is baked by Levites who can sing<\/span>
\n<\/span>The Shepherd’s songs, and Sabbath candles shine<\/span>
\n<\/span>As lodgers eat the Shepherd’s Sabbath feast.<\/span>
\n<\/span>How close is God, as close as breath, how near<\/span>
\n<\/span>Is God, like wind upon my hair, like air<\/span>
\n<\/span>Inside my lungs. The lantern of His name<\/span>
\n<\/span>Reveals my Shepherd’s paths; I have no fear<\/span>
\n<\/span>Of hungry, stalking wolves, for He is here,<\/span>
\n<\/span>And more than here, the Light inside the flame.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Master of heaven and earth, why this grace,<\/span>
\n<\/span>This overflowing cup of wine?\u00a0 And how<\/span>
\n<\/span>Can I repay You for Your Shepherd’s rod,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Your staff, the gentle shining of Your face,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The table You prepare?\u00a0 To You I bow,<\/span>
\n<\/span>To You I raise the cup and drink, my God.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Shepherd’s key has opened wide the gate<\/span>
\n<\/span>To gather in the wise with books they wrote;<\/span>
\n<\/span>The righteous come, and prophets who devote<\/span>
\n<\/span>Their lives to God, the noble and the great.<\/span>
\n<\/span>But who am I to enter gates?\u00a0 I wait<\/span>
\n<\/span>Outside the Temple court, and watch a goat<\/span>
\n<\/span>That guards a mended, many-colored coat<\/span>
\n<\/span>While Temple-priests and Levites celebrate.<\/span>
\n<\/span>If only I could be a voice that sings <\/span>
\n<\/span>With those who dwell within the House of God,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Or hold the coat to see if it might fit, <\/span>
\n<\/span>Or stroke the Shepherd\u2019s goat that plays with kings;<\/span>
\n<\/span>If only I \u2014 but look, the Shepherd\u2019s rod<\/span>
\n<\/span>Has cleared a space inside, for me to sit.<\/span><\/p>\n
