Jean-Baptiste Lully, Ps 20 \u201cExaudiat te Dominus\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687), is a composer whose fascinating life and death might overshadow the intriguing, diverse and important music that he wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus it is told how the Italian youth (Giovanni Batista), who excelled at dance and instrumental performance, became the unchallenged dominator over French music, during the reign of Louis XIV. He has a place of honor in the history of music as a pioneer of French opera and comic theater, when he collaborated with Moliere. Likewise, he is of great importance in the development of instrumental music, and especially music for dance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His religious vocal music is wide-ranging. In one of the performances of these works, there occurred a tragic accident: he accidentally hurt his leg with the conductor\u2019s baton, which eventually led to his death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The genre of the work is known as \u201cgrand motet,\u201d meaning a vocal composition of a number of sections, which can expand to be scored for choirs, soloists and orchestra,\u00a0 in the spirit of the French Baroque. Here, the parts intertwine with one another, and they move the Latin text forward – the entire chapter – with each verse being treated by soloists and\u00a0 choir. The enthusiasm is palpable from the first moment, and there are many parts where the upbeat tempi are sung by the entire choir.<\/span><\/p>\n

The variety in the expression of the different verses represent the understandings of the composer. The relatively intimate moments of speech with God are replaced by \u201cthey call on chariots and horses\u201d – when the tempo becomes an urgent gallop, giving the impression of a particularly fervent pilgrimage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Immediately following there appears the very touching appeal to God with which the chapter ends, which is probably the deepest part of the work. The last verse – the glory to Father and Son (doxology) is of course not from Psalms, but it is one of the more brilliant parts of the entire composition, scored for trumpets and drums.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
