In his opening remarks here, Radak mentioned Jesus\u2014by name\u2014and refuted a Christian attempt to identify him with the subject of our psalm. Radak distinguished himself in his Psalms commentary by his numerous refutations of Christian beliefs and their attempts to base them on their interpretations of Tanakh. Here, he argued that our psalm was either composed by a later poet about David, or by David about his messianic descendant, but that the entire context is inconsistent with its identification with Jesus.<\/span><\/p>\n

Regarding: \u201cThe Lord said to me, you are My son\u201d (2:7), Radak took issue with the Christian identification of Jesus as \u201cthe son of God,\u201d explaining: \u201cAnyone who hearkens to the service of God can be called His son, just like a son harkens to his father and is prepared to serve him.\u201d Elsewhere, he took issue with another core Christian belief, namely, that the Jewish law and covenant had been replaced by a new \u201ctestament.\u201d Commenting on Ps. 19:10: \u201cThe fear of the Lord is pure, abiding forever,\u201d he stated:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2026 those who say that the Torah given at Mount Sinai was valid only until the advent of Jesus for until his time it was [to be taken] literally (<\/span>gufanit<\/span><\/em>) and when he came, he commanded that [it be taken] allegorically (<\/span>ruchanit<\/span><\/em>). Their words are wind and vanity, for the commandments which they say are allegory and not to be taken literally were specifically commanded by God … If the commandments were allegorical, [their intent] would be uncertain and everyone would be of a different opinion concerning them. Scripture says, “For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not too hard for thee neither is it far off” (Deut. 30:11). If the commandments were hidden and not to be taken literally, they would be too hard and far off.*<\/span><\/p>\n

In concluding a lengthy comment about lending with interest (Ps. 15:5), Radak took special note of his polemical remarks:<\/span><\/p>\n

I have expanded upon this for you to find a refutation of the Christians who maintain that David did not distinguish between Jews and gentiles and prohibited all interest. This is impossible because David would not prohibit what Moses permitted at God\u2019s instruction, and the Torah states: \u201cDo not add to it or subtract from it\u201d (Dt. 13:2).<\/span><\/p>\n
