Given the context of Psalm 20, however, it is tempting to render it more literally as a psalm in praise of a military success. However, just which historical circumstance may have inspired it is grist for the exegetical mills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Radak stated somewhat laconically \u201cThe poet would recite it on behalf of David whenever he went out to battle,\u201d Malbim took a more particular approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The context and content of the psalm indicate that it was composed on account of a battle that David waged against a nation distant from Jerusalem. There, he was endangered, and when news of this reached Jerusalem, they prayed for him and sent troops to support him. However, while they were still on the march, they heard that David was spared miraculously so by the time of their arrival they were able to triumph without doing battle, but merely by the name of God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It appears to have been during a battle against the Philistines (2 Samuel 21) when David was fatigued and Yishbi BeNob intended to kill him until Avishai ben Tzeruyah came to his aid and slew the Philistine [i.e., Yishbi]. At that juncture, the soldiers swore that he would no longer accompany them to battle (2 Samuel 21:17) and it explains how there was another battle at Nob\u2014which they won\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The psalm itself is divided into three parts. (A) the prayer they recited for David (vs. 2-4), (B) the response of the poets\/singers upon hearing that David had escaped danger (4-7), and (C) the response of the chief musician\/singer when the battle concluded with a victory that required neither sword nor lance, but solely the name of God (7-10).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>image:\u00a0 by Hillel
