Psalm 27:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/span><\/em>
\n<\/span>King David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/span><\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/span><\/em>
\n<\/span>David wrote this psalm as a prayer to God that he be saved from his enemies and that he have the strength to serve God in the best way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Genre:<\/span><\/em>
\n<\/span>Psalm of Individual Confidence-in this psalm, the worshiper expresses absolute certainty that his prayers will be heard.
\n<\/span>Psalm of Individual Lament-This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:
\n<\/span><\/em>With this psalm, King David seeks to strengthen his own resolve, and that of his warriors, to fight and pray for victory. He intends to teach us that Divine Providence and guidance are directly related to the degree of one\u2019s cleaving to God.
\n<\/span>This psalm consists of fourteen verses, subdivided into three parts.
\n<\/span>In verses 1-3, King David describes his complete trust in God.
\n<\/span>In verses 4-6, he puts forth his request of God.
\n<\/span>In verses 7-14, he further elaborates on his request, beseeching the reader to \u201cAdonoy, hear my voice, when I call; be gracious to me and answer me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim-When to Say:<\/span><\/em>
\n<\/span>To calm an animal (say this in the animal\u2019s ear)–Verse 1 acknowledges God as one\u2019s light and salvation, and as the source of all animal life. Why, then, should one fear?<\/span><\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>Recited twice a day during the entire month of Elul through Shemini Atzeret, days considered by the Midrash to be an auspicious time period for repentance.
\n<\/span>Verse 14 is found in some siddurim<\/em> as the introductory verse to Ein Keloheinu<\/em>, recited towards the end of Shacharit<\/em>, in some communities daily, and in others only on Shabbat.<\/span><\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim:
\n<\/span><\/em>Verse 13: \u201cHad I not believed that I would see the goodness of Adonoy in the land of living.\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span>The Talmud, Berachot 4a, explains that King David trusted that God gives just rewards to the righteous in the World to Come. He did not know, however, whether he himself had a portion among them. While sure of his devoutness, he wasn\u2019t certain that he merited to be rewarded and was further afraid that any sins on his part may cause him to lose any reward he had indeed earned.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Verse 14: \u201cHope to Adonoy, be strong and He will give you courage; and hope to Adonoy.\u201d
\n<\/span>The Talmud, Berachot 32b, deduces that the repetitive phrase \u201cchazak veya\u2019ameitz<\/em>\u201d–\u201dbe strong and brave\u201d, indicates the need for extra effort in this endeavor. The Talmud advises further: \u201cIf a person sees that his prayers have not been answered, he should pray again.\u201d One must constantly strengthen himself during prayer to ensure proper concentration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
