Psalm 26:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>King David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/span><\/p>\n

When and Why:
\n<\/span><\/em>David wrote this psalm as a way of reaffirming that his sin with Bath Sheba was an exception to the rule and that he is truly a faithful servant of God, even though he sinned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Genre:
\n<\/span><\/em>Psalm of Individual Lament-This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>The righteous man trusts in the LORD and appeals to Him to avenge his enemies. He asks that God alone judge him, for he is certain that the Holy One will not forsake him.
\n<\/span>This psalm consists of twelve verses, subdivided into three sections.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Verse 1 is an introduction, and is comprised of King David\u2019s request of God to judge him favorably.
\n<\/span>In verses 2-10, King David justifies his request, pointing to his own righteousness.
\n<\/span>In verses 11 and 12, King David comes full circle, once again beseeching God and affirming the righteous path he has taken.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim-When to Say:
\n<\/span><\/em>For one who is in distress, whether at sea or on land, or for one who is in captivity, to be saved from his distress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>Verse 8 is the third verse of Ma Tovu<\/em>, recited by some upon entry into the synagogue in the morning. Originally coined by Bilam, the seer hired by Balak, king of Moab, to curse Israel, who in turn blessed Israel instead, the verse Ma Tovu<\/em> extols the beauty of the \u201ctents of Jacob, the dwelling places of Israel\u201d, a reference to the synagogue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim:
\n<\/span><\/em>Verse 6–\u201dI will wash my hands in purity, and I will encircle Your altar, Adonoy.\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span>The Talmud, Berachot 15aa, deduces that the performing of the morning rituals of washing ones hands, laying Tefillin (phylacteries) and reciting the Shema is comparable to building an altar and sacrificing upon it to God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
