Psalm 25:<\/p>\n

Author:
\n<\/span><\/em>King David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/span><\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/span><\/em>
\n<\/span>David wrote this psalm as an entreaty to God to save him from his enemies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Genre:<\/span><\/em>
\n<\/span>Psalm of Individual Lament-This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.
\n<\/span>Acrostic: A literary composition in which the writer has used the letters of the Hebrew alphabet in their order as the initial letter for a sequence of verses.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:
\n<\/span><\/em>King David composed this psalm as a sincere plea for atonement for both his sins and those of the entire community of Israel. He acclaims God\u2019s kindness towards those who observe His covenant, and asks that all those who seek refuge in Him, be redeemed. He profers four specific requests: salvation from his enemies, pardon for his sins, knowledge of God\u2019s ways, and God\u2019s help in walking in the path of justice and integrity.\u00a0
\n<\/span>The psalm consists of twenty-two verses, subdivided into ten parts. It is arranged in order of the Hebrew alphabet (excluding the letters bet, vuv, <\/em>and koof<\/em>).
\n<\/span>Verse 1 is an introduction, in which King David expresses a yearning for God.
\n<\/span>In verses 2 and 3, he declares complete trust in God.
\n<\/span>In verses 4 and five, he requests to know the ways of God.
\n<\/span>In verses 6 and 6, he similarly pleads for mercy.
\n<\/span>In verses 8-10, God\u2019s attributes of goodness and lovingkindness are extolled.\u00a0
\n<\/span>In verse 11, he asks God for forgiveness.
\n<\/span>In verses 12-14, he rejoices in the happiness of the man who fears God.
\n<\/span>In verse 15, he expresses his constant hope in God\u2019s salvation.
\n<\/span>In verses 16-20, he petitions God for deliverance from troubles and enemies.
\n<\/span>In verse 21, he beseeches God to help in following in the path of integrity and righteousness.\u00a0
\n<\/span>In verse 22, he extends his request for deliverance and redemption to all of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim-When to Say:
\n<\/span><\/em>To rise to spiritual greatness–Verse 20 states: \u201cPreserve my soul and rescue me, let me not be ashamed for I have taken refuge in You.\u201d
\n<\/span>For distress (say every morning)–Verse 22 states: \u201cGod, Redeem Israel from all its troubles.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:
\n<\/span><\/em>Verse 4 is recited responsively during the repetition of the Amidah (Silent Meditation) of Rosh HaShanah.
\n<\/span>Verses 6 is the third verse of V\u2019hu Rachum<\/em> of Pesukei<\/em> Dezimra<\/em> (Introductory Verses of praise to the Shacharit morning services), one of the opening verses of the long Tachanun<\/em> (Supplication prayer) recited on Mondays and Thursdays, as well as a part of the final paragraph of the regular day Tachanun<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
