Psalm 24:<\/p>\n

Author:
\n<\/span><\/em>King David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/span><\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/span><\/em>
\n<\/span>David wrote this psalm to be read at the time when the Ark was being brought into the Temple.<\/span><\/p>\n

Genre:
\n<\/span><\/em>Psalm of Wisdom-This psalm contains teachings and wise advice and is meant to instruct people on how to live a Godly life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:
\n<\/span><\/em>This psalm clarifies that the purpose of creation is to establish the kingship of God in this world. This goal, the Singer tells us, is accomplished when men purify their souls, thereby becoming worthy of ascending Har Hashem<\/em>–God\u2019s mountain, the site of the Beit HaMikdash<\/em> (Holy Temple).\u00a0
\n<\/span>This psalm consists of ten verses, subdivided into three parts. It is worth noting that this chapter opens with the words \u201cL\u2019David Mizmor<\/em>–\u201dOf David, [a Psalm]\u201d. This and all such introductions may have been written by David himself, or may simply be an introduction to his words.
\n<\/span>In verses 1 and 2, King David offers praise to God, Creator of the universe.
\n<\/span>In verses 3 and 4, King David asks and answers the question: \u201cWho may ascend the mountain of Adonoy.\u201d
\n<\/span>In verses 7-10, the Psalmist calls out to the gates that they should open to allow the \u201cKing of Glory\u201d to enter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Technical Terminology:
\n<\/span><\/em>Selah<\/em>-While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar option is that it is a musical notation, instructing the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. Alternatively, \u201cSelah\u201d may mean \u201ceverlasting\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim-When to Say
\n<\/span><\/em>For protection against floods–Verse 2 states: \u201cFor He founded it (the earth) upon the seas.\u201d
\n<\/span>For achieving spiritual greatness–Verse 3 asks: \u201cWho may ascend the mountain of Adonoy.\u201d (A similar thought is expressed in chapter 92).<\/span><\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:<\/span><\/em>
\n<\/span>Recited as the Shir Shel Yom<\/em>–the Psalm of the Day, of Sunday. Recited upon returning the Torah scroll to the Aron Kodesh<\/em> (Holy Ark), except on Shabbat.
\n<\/span>Verse 1 is included in the Mishna (Tamid 7:4).
\n<\/span>Verses 7-10 are found in the Amidah (Silent Meditation) of Musaf of Rosh HaShanah.
\n<\/span>Recited responsively upon the conclusion of the Amidah of Ma\u2019ariv (evening service) of Rosh HaShana.<\/span><\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim:
\n<\/span><\/em>Verse 1: \u201cThe earth is Adonoy\u2019s and the fullness thereof.\u201d The Talmud, Rosh HaShana 31a, states, as mentioned above, that the Levites sang this chapter in the Beit HaMikdash on the first day of the week.
\n<\/span>The Talmud, Berachot 35a, teaches, \u201cWhoever derives benefit from this world without first reciting a blessing, is regarded as if he has derived benefit from the consecrated property of [God in] heaven.\u201d\u00a0
\n<\/span>Verses 7- 10: The Talmud, Shabbat 30a, relates that when King Solomon built the Beit HaMikdash<\/em>, he sought to bring the Ark into the Holy of Holies. The gates, however, could not be opened. Solomon therefore recited 24 songs of prayer, yet still the gates remained closed. He then recited Psalms 24, verses 7-10, and the gates ran after him, attempting to swallow him. They said to him: \u201cWho is the King of Glory\u201d to whom you refer?\u201d Solomon replied that he was not referring to himself, but rather to God, the mighty and strong. The gates however still remained closed until he asked God to remember the pieties of his father David. Thereupon the gates finally opened. At that moment, the faces of David\u2019s enemies turned dark with humiliation, for they saw that God had forgiven David for his sin with Bath Sheba.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
