Psalm 23:<\/p>\n

Author:
\n<\/span><\/em>King David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/span><\/p>\n

When and Why:
\n<\/span><\/em>David wrote this psalm when he was fleeing from Saul.<\/span><\/p>\n

Genre:
\n<\/span><\/em>Psalm of Individual Confidence-In this psalm, the worshiper expresses absolute certainty that his prayers will be heard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/span><\/em>
\n<\/span>King David composed this psalm to praise God for His supervision and guidance, and to beseech him for the future. He asks that he always be joyous, content with his portion, and lack nothing in the World to Come.
\n<\/span>This psalm consists of a mere six verses.
\n<\/span>Verse 1 opens with a dedication, after which the chapter is subdivided into two parts.\u00a0
\n<\/span>In verse 1-4, King David compares himself to a lamb and likens God to a shepherd.
\n<\/span>In verses 5 and 6, he compares himself to a guest in the house of God.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim-When to Say
\n<\/span><\/em>To request positive and pleasant dreams: Verse 4 states: \u201cThough I walk in the\u00a0<\/span>valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.\u201d The Talmud informs us that sleep is equal to 1\/60th of death.
\n<\/span>To rise to greatness: Verse 5 states: \u201cYou anointed my head with oil.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur<\/em>:<\/span>
\n<\/span>Recited as part of the funeral service. It has become particularly associated with funeral liturgy in the English-speaking world, and films with funeral scenes often depict a graveside recitation of the psalm.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Recited in some congregations after the Amidah of Kabbalat Shabbat (Friday night service).
\n<\/span>Often sung at Se\u2019udah Sh\u2019lishit–<\/em>the Third Meal of Shabbat, usually eaten towards the end of the day.<\/span><\/p>\n
