David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genre: <br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalm of Individual Lament&#8211;This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chapter Summary:<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the Holy Spirit upon him, King David authored this psalm as a prayer for deliverance from one\u2019s enemies, and for the nation\u2019s deliverance from future exiles. He expresses confidence that in the end, God\u2019s humble servants will be redeemed.\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This psalm consists of thirty-two verses, subdivided into two parts.\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 1 serves as a heading.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verses 2-22, feeling abandoned by God, King David cries out in distress.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verses 23-32, he vows to offer gratitude for his salvation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technical Terminology:<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Al Ayelet HaShachar&#8211;<\/em>On the Doe of the Dawn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shimush Tehillim-When to Say:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When preparing to face an enemy. Verse 6 states: \u201cTo You they cried and were delivered.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To purify oneself (recite seven times)&#8211;Verse 1o states: \u201cFor you took me out of the womb.\u201d This verse is compared to the emerging from a Mikveh.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To cross over a river&#8211;Verse 15 states: \u201cLike water I am poured out.\u201d The Talmud compares this to a person in fear, as their stomach \u201cmelts like water.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be saved from wild animals&#8211;Verse 22 states: \u201cDeliver me from the lion\u2019s mouth; for from the horns of <em>Re\u2019emim<\/em> You have answered me.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To inspire one\u2019s heart in Torah and closeness to God&#8211;Verse 27 states: \u201cLet the humble eat and be satisfied, let them praise Adonoy, those who seek Him; may your hearts be alive forever.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where in the Siddur:<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 4 is one of the opening verses of <em>Uva Letzion<\/em>, a concluding prayer of the weekday <em>Shacharit<\/em> morning service, as well as after the Amidah (Silent Meditation) of <em>Motza\u2019ei Shabbat<\/em>.\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 29 is appended to <em>Az Yashir<\/em>&#8211;the Song of Moses (Exodus), recited in <em>Shacharit<\/em> (morning service).<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 29 is also found in the <em>Malchuyot<\/em> (Kingship) section of the <em>Musaf<\/em> of Rosh HaShana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biblical Places:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bashan&#8211;a country located in modern day Syria, not to be confused with Mount Bashan also reference in this chapter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excerpted from <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Your Lips To God\u2019s Ears<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by Reuben Ebrahimoff available on Amazon.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":79908,"id":79908,"title":"psalms -
