Psalm 20:<\/p>\n

Author:
\n<\/span><\/em>King David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/span><\/p>\n

When and Why:
\n<\/span><\/em>David wrote this psalm during wartime and he read it when his armies went out to battle.<\/span><\/p>\n

Genre:\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/em>Psalm of Royalty-This psalm describes how God reigns supreme. It focuses on the human king of Israel, or upon God as King of Israel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>This psalm was intended to be recited as a blessing offered by the nation of Israel to its king. It was also chanted by King David every time he dispatched his troops into battle.
\n<\/span>This psalm consists of ten verses, subdivided into two parts.
\n<\/span>Verse 1 serves as a heading.\u00a0
\n<\/span>In verses 2-6, the people speak to the king and bless him. While this psalm is a prayer recited on behalf of a mortal king, God, the ultimate king, is alluded to here as well. \u201cMay Adonoy answer you on the day of distress\u201d, beseeches the Psalmist. \u201cMay He grant you what your heart desires, and fulfill all your plans.\u201d
\n<\/span>In verses 7-9, King David offers an expression of confidence in God\u2019s salvation.
\n<\/span>In verse 10, King David concludes by calling upon God to send deliverance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim-When to Say:
\n<\/span><\/em>For success in a court case.
\n<\/span>In times of distress, particularly by women suffering the pangs of childbirth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Technical Terminology:
\n<\/span><\/em>Selah–While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar opinion is that it is a musical notation, instruction the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. Alternatively, \u201cSelah\u201d may mean \u201ceverlasting\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:
\n<\/span><\/em>Recited in its entirety towards the end of the daily Shacharit<\/em> (morning service)–except on Shabbat, Yom Tov (Festivals), Rosh Chodesh<\/em> (New Moon), Chol HaMo\u2019ed<\/em> (Intermediate Days of Sukkot and Passover), Tishah BeAv (Fast of the Ninth of Av), Hanukkah, Purim, Shushan Purim, the 14th and 15th of Adar 1 in a leap year, and the day before Yom Kippur and Passover–between the second Ashrei<\/em> and Uva Letzion<\/em>. In this context it is referred to simply as \u201cLamnatsei\u2019ach<\/em>\u201d (the first word of the psalm).\u00a0
\n<\/span>Verses 2 and 10 are part of the opening paragraph of the long Tachanun<\/em> (Supplication Prayer) recited on Mondays and Thursdays.
\n<\/span>Verse 10 is also the 11th verse of V\u2019hu Rachum<\/em> in Pesukei Dezimra<\/em> (Introductory Verses of Praise to the Shacharit morning service), the final verse of Yehi Kivod<\/em> in Pesukei Dezimra<\/em>, one of the verses of Uva Letzion<\/em>, the second of two verses recited as an introduction to Ma\u2019ariv<\/em> (evening service) as well as part of the Motza\u2019ei Shabbat Havdalah<\/em> service.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim:
\n<\/span>Verse 2 \u201cMay Adonoy answer you on the day of distress; May the Name of Jacob\u2019s God fortify you.\u201d
\n<\/span>Rashi, commenting on the Talmud, Berachot 64a, explains that David would recite this psalm on behalf of the Jews when they would go out to do battle. Why was it, he asks, that when King David would beseech God on behalf of the Jews he would do so specifically in the merit of Jacob and not in the merit of Abraham and Isaac as well? He answers that as Jacob was the patriarch of all the twelve tribes of Israel, it was therefore his unique privilege and responsibility to pray for their mercy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
