Before Him will kneel all who go down to the dust whose life is undone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The inclusion of the dead among God\u2019s worshipful subjects is unusual because a reiterated theme in Psalms is that the dead, mute forever, cannot praise God. Perhaps the poet, having imagined God\u2019s dominion extending to the far ends of the earth, also wants to extend it downward&#8211;against common usage&#8211;into the very underworld. The Masoretic text continues to be incoherent here, reading <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kol-dishney-\u2019arets<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201call the fats (?) of the earth.\u201d The translation assumes a widely accepted emendation, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kol-yesheiney-\u2019arets<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the last word, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018arets<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, means both \u201cearth\u201d and \u201cnetherworld\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From: Robert Alter, The Hebrew Bible, vol. 3: Writings, W.
