Psalm 19:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>King David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/span><\/p>\n

Genre:
\n<\/span><\/em>Psalm of Praise–This is a psalm of celebration, often the result of a victory. It declares God\u2019s goodness and urges all of creation to worship.
\n<\/span>Psalm of Wisdom–This psalm contains teachings and wise advice and is meant to instruct people on how to live a Godly life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>The Singer dealers that God\u2019s glory is revealed in this world in two ways: through creation and through Torah. However, as he points out, the Torah\u2019s excellence exceeds that of creation in its ability to bring man to perfection and fulfillment in life.\u00a0
\n<\/span>This psalm contains fifteen verses, subdivided into two parts.
\n<\/span>Verse 1 serves as a heading.
\n<\/span>In verses 2-7, King David praises God for the wonder of the heavens, calling them a testimony to God\u2019s greatness.
\n<\/span>In verses 8-15, he praises the Torah and expresses his yearning to fulfill its commandments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:<\/span><\/em>
\n<\/span>To ward off an evil spirit (say this 7 times)
\n<\/span>For an overdue childbirth (say this 7 times)–Verse 6 states: \u201cAnd it [the sun] is like a groom departing his bridal chamber, happy as a warrior to run on course.\u201d
\n<\/span>To inspire one\u2019s heart towards Torah–Verse 9 states: \u201cThe precepts of Adonoy, are upright rejoicing the heart.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:
\n<\/span><\/em>Recited in its entirety as part of Pesukei Dezimra<\/em> (Introductory Verses of Praise to the Shacharit<\/em> morning service) of Shabbat and Yom Tov (Festivals).
\n<\/span>Recited at weddings in some traditions.
\n<\/span>Recited on the first day of Shavu\u2019ot in some traditions.
\n<\/span>Verses 8 & 9 are recited upon the removal of the Torah from the Aron Kodesh (Holy Ark).
\n<\/span>Verse 14 is found in the repetition of the Musaf Amidah of Rosh HaShana.
\n<\/span>Verse 15 is found at the conclusion of Shemoneh Esrei<\/em> (Silent Meditation), the bedtime Shema, as well as upon the removal of the Torah from the Ark. (See Talmud Berachot, 4b, for further explanation).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim:
\n<\/span><\/em>Verses 15: \u201cMay they be acceptable–the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart before You, Adonoy, my Rock and my redeemer.\u201d The Talmud, Berachot 9b, states that just as King David said these words after the composition of eighteen psalms, so too we say this verse after the eighteen blessings of the daily Amidah (Silent Meditation). While the observant reader will notice that this verse concludes chapter 19, and not chapter 18, it has been noted in the opening remarks to chapter 1 that chapters 1 and 2 were originally one chapter and later subdivided into two; the original chapter 18 then became chapter 19 as we find it today.<\/span><\/p>\n
