Psalm 17:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>King David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/span><\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>David wrote this psalm as a prayer to God to save him from his enemies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Genre:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>Psalm of Individual Lament-This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshiper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>David offers a plea to God, appealing for deliverance, as his heart is pure. \u201cRise up, Adonoy, confront him, bring him to his knees\u201d, he declares of his enemies. These words are also understood as referring to man\u2019s evil inclination and the angel of deal.<\/span>
\n<\/span>This psalm contains fifteen verses, subdivided into three parts.<\/span>
\n<\/span>In verses 1-5, King David asks that his prayers be accepted, as God has already purified him with suffering which cleanses a person of sin.<\/span>
\n<\/span>In verses 6-12, he once again requests that his prayers be accepted, and describes the wickedness of his enemies, thereby elucidating the suffering referenced above.<\/span>
\n<\/span>In verses 13-15, he asks that God rescue him from his enemies and that he receive his fair share in this world as well as in the world to come.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim-When to Say:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>For traveling on a journey–Verse 4 states: \u201cI have preserved [my soul] by avoiding the way of the lawbreakers.\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Where in the Siddur:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>Verse 2 is found in the repetition of the Amidah of Rosh HaShana.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Verse 8 is part of the prayers of the bedtime Shema. It is also paraphrased as part of the blessing following the Shema of Ma\u2019ariv.<\/span><\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim: <\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>Verse 15: \u201cAs for me, in righteousness I will behold Your presence; I will be satisfied when I awake, with Your likeness.\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span>The Talmud, Bava Batra 10a, explains: When one brings a large gift to a king, it is questionable whether or not the king\u2019s palace servants will accept the gift on the king\u2019s behalf. And, if it is accepted, it is still questionable whether the visitor will be granted a personal audience with the king. However, when one gives a perutah<\/em>, a small coin, to a pauper, he is immediately deserving and receives the Divine Presence.<\/span>
\n<\/span>The Talmud further infers that this verse refers to Talmidei Chachamim (Torah scholars), who remain awake late at night studying Torah, thereby lacking sleep. God therefore satisfies them in the world to come with the Divine Presence. <\/span><\/p>\n
