  1. Where there\u2019s God, there\u2019s morality.<\/em> The psalm ties the view that there is no God, to the evil of the \u201cbenighted man.\u201d This becomes clearer in verse 2: if there is no one looking, then there is none to give an accounting to.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. The individual and the collective<\/em>. The psalm grapples with the personal experience of the individual facing evil, an experience that is applicable in every place and every historical period. The last verse connects the individual to the collective in a particular historical context, with a prayer for salvation, and a return from exile.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. A view from above on the evil below<\/em>. The idea that God is looking down on us (verse 2) and occasionally even descends to check out the situation down here on earth, we are familiar with. For instance, in the story of the tower of Babel: \u201cThe LORD came down to look at the city and tower that man had built\u201d (Gen. 11:5), or in the story of Sodom and Gomorrah: \u201cI will go down to see whether they have acted altogether according to the outcry that has reached Me\u201d (Gen 18:21).<\/span><\/li>\n
