Psalm 14:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>King David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/span><\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>David wrote this psalm concerning the Israelites who betrayed him and revealed his location to Saul.<\/span><\/p>\n

Genre:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>Psalm of Individual Lament–This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>King David speaks against those who deny Divine Providence. He rejects the wicked man\u2019s belief that one can act with impunity. \u201cOh that out of Zion would come Israel\u2019s deliverance!\u201d, he cries. <\/span>
\n<\/span>This psalm consists of seven verses, subdivided into three parts. <\/span>
\n<\/span>In verses 1-3, King David laments how his people have deviated from the path of righteousness and gone astray.<\/span>
\n<\/span>In verses 4-6, he rebukes the wicked and tells of the punishment to come.<\/span>
\n<\/span>In verse 7, he expresses his hope for salvation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim-When to Say:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>For salvation from harmful words of others–Verse 7 states: \u201cOh that out of Zion would come Israel\u2019s deliverance! When Adonoy returns the captivity of His people, Jacob will exult, Israel will rejoice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Biblical People:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>Ya\u2019akov–Jacob, also called Israel, son of Isaac and Rebekah and grandson of Abraham was the third Hebrew patriarch and the traditional ancestor of the people of Israel.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Yisrael–The Nation of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Biblical Places:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>Zion–often used as a synonym for Jerusalem. The term Zion originally referred only to the area where a Jebusite fortress once stood, also the location of the City of David. Zion was later used by prophets and psalmists as another name for Jerusalem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
