The outstanding literary feature of this psalm is the fourfold repetition of \u201cHow long\u201d (`<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ad \u2018anah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), an indication, perhaps, that unlike the evildoer in Chapter 10 who claimed that God \u201cturns away His face\u201d permanently (see our comments there), our \u201chero\u201d understands that it is just temporary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continuing, he made the following request: \u201cLook at me, answer me, O Lord, my God! Restore the luster to my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death\u201d (4). The exegetes were divided in the interpretation of this verse. Rashi, citing Jeremiah 51:39, commented: \u201cDeath is called sleep.\u201d Ibn Ezra, like our translation, treated the original (literally, \u201clest i sleep death\u201d) as an elliptical phrase: \u201cthe sleep of death.\u201d Radak took it figuratively to signify \u201cthe darkness and slumber of the exile and its distress.\u201d Malbim, too, interpreted it figuratively, saying: \u201cMy soul is asleep or ceasing from its spirituality until it will be cut off from its roots and I will die a spiritual death.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether the sleep is spiritual or physical death, what is the luster whose application to the eyes might prevent it? The Aramaic Targum Yonatan rendered it as: \u201cIllumine my eyes by Your Torah,\u201d which rendition is justified by an examination of the connection between illumined eyes and joyful hearts described in Psalm 19:9: \u201cThe precepts of the Lord are just, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rejoicing the heart<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the instruction of the Lord is lucid, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making the eyes light up<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d And just as lit up eyes indicate a joyful heart, despair is described by a psalmist as: \u201cI am all bent and bowed; I walk about in gloom all day long\u2026 My mind reels; my strength fails me; <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my eyes too have lost their luster<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Ps. 38:7-11).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our psalmist is afraid that he is falling into a depression born of despondency from which he may never emerge, so he prays to God for the hope and optimism that will save him from despair\u2014and from his
