He composed this work for them, which is based on a translation of the verses of Psalms 13 to German.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He chose not to overly challenge the vocal parts, but the work nevertheless includes some interesting and complex tonal structures, such as the imitations, which symbolize the exultations of the enemies over the suffering of the psalmist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The musical approach is traditional: dividing the chapter into its constituent verses, where each verse becomes a small musical unit in its own right, with the contrasts between the different characters of these units adding tension and interest in the work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After three exclamations to God, comes the cry \u201cHow long, O LORD; will You ignore me forever?\u201d that continues with variations. The cry \u201cRestore the luster to my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death\u201d is presented in a particularly dark mode, given to the low voices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From this low point, and after the voices of the enemies, the music changes its color, and becomes upbeat and positive for the last verse &#8211; which exchanges suffering for salvation.
