Psalm 13:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>King David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Genre:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>Psalm of Individual Lament–This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshiper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>King David teaches us to ask God not to forget us, and not to hide His face from us. \u201cUntil when\u201d, he asks. How long much each Jew suffer unrelenting persecutions at the hands of his enemies? Yet, he answers, trusting in God\u2019s kindness will see us through.\u00a0
\n<\/span>This psalm consists of six verses, subdivided into three parts. <\/span>
\n<\/span>Verse 1 is an introduction.<\/span>
\n<\/span>In verses 2 and 3, King David laments: \u201cUntil when, Adonoy, will You forget me, forever? Until when will You hide Your face from me?\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span>In verses 4 & 5, he further beseeches God to hear his prayer.<\/span>
\n<\/span>In verse 6, he concludes by expressing his hope and trust in God\u2019s deliverance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>To avoid unnatural death and for illness of the eye–Verse 4 states: \u201cbrighten my eyes lest I slumber into death.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>Verse 4 is recited as part of the bedtime Shema.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Verse 6 is the ninth verse of Hoshi\u2019a Et Amecha of Pesukei Dezimra<\/em> (Introductory Verses of Praise to the Shacharit morning service.)<\/span><\/p>\n
