Our Psalm ends with a classic description of God: \u201cFor the Lord is righteous (t<\/em><\/span>zadiq)<\/span><\/em>. He loves righteous deeds (<\/span>tzedaqot)<\/span><\/em>. The upright (<\/span>yashar)<\/span><\/em>\u00a0shall behold His face\u201d (<\/span>Psalms 11:7<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

Midrash Tehillim 11:7<\/span><\/a> provides an extensive interpretation of this verse. Rabbi Yehudah bar Simon commented that people normally hate those who engage in the same occupation [because of competition]. But the Holy One, blessed be He, is different, \u201cFor the Lord is righteous\u201d and He loves human beings who are also righteous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And what is meant by: \u201cThe upright shall behold His face\u201d? There are seven groups of righteous people who in the future will illuminate the world. Their faces radiate like the sun, the moon, the firmament, the stars, the flashes of lightning, the <\/span>shoshanim<\/em> <\/span>[\u201clight-reflecting lilies\u201d?] (see<\/span> Psalms 45:1<\/span><\/a>) and the torches (compare<\/span> Pesiqta de-Rav Kahana 27:2<\/span><\/a> which substitutes \u201cthe lampstand of the Temple\u201d for \u201ctorches\u201d).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The most elevated group are the ones who will \u201creceive the face of the Divine Presence of God \u2013 <\/span>mekablin pney Shekhinah<\/span><\/em>\u201d. This is the highest group of the righteous, as it says: \u201cThe upright shall behold His face\u201d. Another verse says: \u201cThe upright shall dwell with Your presence\u201d (<\/span>Psalms 140:14<\/span><\/a>). But it only needed to say: \u201cThe upright shall behold His face\u201d! For this reason, our verse (Psalms 11:7) uses the poetic expression <\/span>paneymo <\/span><\/em>\u2013 \u201cHis face\u201d indicating that the upright shall see not only the face of the Shekhinah, but also the face of God\u2019s heavenly retinue. Note that our verse speaks in the singular of the \u201cupright\u201d (<\/span>yashar<\/span><\/i>), but the verb \u201cthey shall behold\u201d (<\/span>yehezu<\/span><\/em>) is in the plural! This indicates that the \u201cupright\u201d shall behold the face of the \u201cUpright One of all Existence\u201d (<\/span>Yesharo shel Olam<\/span><\/em>) and He [God] shall also behold the faces of the \u201cupright\u201d people. For \u201cUpright\u201d (<\/span>Yashar<\/span><\/em>) refers to the Holy One, blessed be He, as it says: \u201cTrue and Upright is He\u201d (<\/span>Deuteronomy 32:4<\/span><\/a>)\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

God shall make the faces of the upright ones radiate like the heavenly bodies that give light to the world, as it says: \u201cAnd the knowledgeable will be radiant like the bright expanse of sky (<\/span>yazhiru ke-zohar ha-rakia\u2019<\/span><\/em>), and those who lead the many to righteousness will be like the stars forever and ever\u201d (<\/span>Daniel 12:3<\/span><\/a>) (Note that this verse is paraphrased in the <\/span>El Malei Rachamim<\/span><\/em> prayer for the soul of the deceased)\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

And every group of upright ones shall have its \u201cown separate compartment in Paradise\u201d \u2026When a righteous person comes to Paradise, all the heavenly hosts say, Make way for so-and-so, the righteous one! And they then escort him from compartment to compartment, until he beholds the face of the Shekhinah, as it says: \u201cThe upright (<\/span>yashar<\/span><\/em>)<\/span><\/i>\u00a0shall behold His face\u201d. This is the function of the seven compartments of Paradise. For each righteous person shall dwell in the compartment that reflects his good
