What color is the Faith-bird?<\/span>
\n<\/span>Is she yellow,<\/span>
\n<\/span>A canary’s yellow, like the soul?<\/span>
\n<\/span>Or is she red,<\/span>
\n<\/span>A parrot’s bright scarlet, like the Torah?<\/span>
\n<\/span>Or is she blue,<\/span>
\n<\/span>A peacock’s deep ultramarine, like Israel?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Does she nest<\/span>
\n<\/span>In the mountains of Moab<\/span>
\n<\/span>Where Balaam blessed the tents of Jacob<\/span>
\n<\/span>And Moses lies buried in an unmarked grave?<\/span>
\n<\/span>Or does she rest<\/span>
\n<\/span>Beside pools of still waters<\/span>
\n<\/span>In Ein-Gedi, where David wrote psalms<\/span><\/p>\n

After fleeing the king?<\/span>
\n<\/span>Or is she in Jerusalem,Preening her feathers <\/span>
\n<\/span>In the crevices of the Kotel,<\/span>
\n<\/span>In clefts of stone?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Does the Faith-bird winter <\/span>
\n<\/span>In the Garden of Eden<\/span>
\n<\/span>Amidst the fragrant blossoms and dark-green leaves\u00a0 <\/span>
\n<\/span>On the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil?<\/span>
\n<\/span>Does she summer<\/span>
\n<\/span>Far up north<\/span>
\n<\/span>In fields of yellow and black sunflowers<\/span>
\n<\/span>Outside Braslav and Uman?<\/span>
\n<\/span>Or are the rumors true:<\/span>
\n<\/span>The Faith-bird was hunted down and killed<\/span>
\n<\/span>In the twentieth century,<\/span>
\n<\/span>One more victim of the Third Reich?<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet I believe, <\/span>
\n<\/span>I believe that even here<\/span>
\n<\/span>In the chill of the cave in which we shiver,<\/span>
\n<\/span>And even now,<\/span>
\n<\/span>As late Shabbat afternoon <\/span>
\n<\/span>Is gradually covered <\/span>
\n<\/span>By the shadow of Saturday night, \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>
\n<\/span>We hear,<\/span>
\n<\/span>We can hear,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The Faith-bird<\/span>
