Not every day does someone get up in the morning and decide to compose music for 50 psalms.<\/span><\/p>\n

Benedetto Marcello, scion to a noble and very musical family from Venice (his brother, Alessandro, is a composer, even more famous than him), displayed his prodigious talents not only in the playing and composition of music, but also in legal studies, and in key positions in the Venetian administration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Considering the fact that not all his time was devoted to music, the vast number of compositions he left behind is awe-inspiring. The collection \u201cPoetic-Harmonic Inspiration\u201d includes compositions based on the first 50 psalms (based on Italian poetic paraphrases by Justiniani), and whose title is apparently an homage to an esteemed colleague – the composer Antonio Vivaldi, who wrote an important series of concerti for violin called \u201cHarmonic Inspiration\u201d (L’estro armonico).<\/span><\/p>\n

Each chapter is a wide-ranging multi-section cantata, where each section is dedicated to a verse or two from the psalm, done in a range of vocal adaptations, and scoring for different instruments. Thus too the composition here, for the paraphrase of psalm 10, divided into a number of parts, or sections, written in range of multi-vocal techniques for a four person choir. The conclusion is a hymn on \u201cYou will incline Your ear to champion the orphan and the downtrodden, that men who are of the earth tyrannize no more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The work is thought to this day to be one of the monumental achievements of the Venetian Baroque. From its inception, it was played throughout Europe, in different translations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Marcello had a connection to Jewish music, both Sephardic and Ashkenazic, of which he heard a great deal in the Venetian ghetto. In the comprehensive introduction which he wrote to the composition, he reveals himself to be a musicologist and historian, who presented Jewish music as one of the fundamental building blocks of Western musical culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He is also known for preserving one of the best-known version of \u201cMa\u2019oz Tzur\u201d for Chanukah. This is actually a version that he heard and adapted, just as he integrated Jewish melodies in his Psalms, even when they weren\u2019t in the right place liturgically (which he was well aware of!). The melody which ends Psalm 10, for instance, is actually taken from the Ashkenazi tradition for Psalm 114.
