It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Psalm of Individual Thanksgiving<\/em>&#8211;This psalm emphasizes gratitude for what God has done for the individual.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Acrostic<\/em>&#8211;A literary composition in which the writer has used the letters of the Hebrew alphabet in their order as the initial letters for a sequence of verses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chapter Summary:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wicked man oppresses the poor and helpless with impunity, symbolic of the Jewish people\u2019s suffering under foreign rule. The psalmist thus pleads for Heaven\u2019s intervention: \u201cWhy, Adonoy, do You stand far off, hiding [Yourself] in times of trouble?\u201d, he asks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This psalm consists of eighteen verses, subdivided into three parts.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verse 1, the psalmist laments God\u2019s seeming distance from him. He expresses his longing for closeness.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verses 2-11, he describes the thoughts and actions of the wicked.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verses 12-18, he prays that the wicked will be destroyed and that God will reveal His sovereignty and judge the world in righteousness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shimush Tehillim&#8211;When to Say:<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For protection from a demon&#8211;Verse 2 states: \u201cThrough the haughtiness of the wicked the poor is hotly pursued, and is caught in the devices which they have conceived.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where in the Siddur:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recited during the Ten Days of Repentance in some traditions.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 16 is part of both the eighth and ninth verses of Yehi Chevod, the introductory paragraph to Ashrei of Pesukei Dezimra (Introductory Verses of Praise to the Shacharit morning service). It is also found in Bauch Hashem Le\u2019olam of Ma\u2019ariv (evening service), as well as in the bedtime Shema.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 17 is found in the repetition of the Shemoneh Esrei (Silent Meditation) of Rosh HaShanah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talmud on Tehillim:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 5: \u201cHis ways prosper at all times; Your judgments are far beyond him.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Talmud, Berachot 7b, teaches us not to contend with a wicked person who appears to be successful.
