  1. Who died<\/em>? The psalm opens with the puzzling heading: \u201cFor the leader; <\/span>\u2018<\/span><\/i>almuth labben<\/span><\/em>.\u201d Is there a connection to the death (<\/span>mut<\/span><\/em>) of Bathsheba\u2019s baby son? To Absalom? Or is the dead one Nabal (\u05e0\u05d1\u05dc is \u05dc\u05d1\u05df spelled backwards)? And perhaps it\u2019s not about a death at all, but rather <\/span>\u2018almuth<\/span><\/em> is a musical term, which the ancient musicians understood? All are possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Facing eternity – and reality<\/em>. Despite the fact that at the beginning of the psalm \u201cYou destroy the wicked; You blot out their name forever\u201d (6) and that \u201cthe LORD abides forever,\u201d the psalmist still beseeches God to fix what needs fixing. That\u2019s life.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. A broken acrostic.<\/em> If you look, you can find the skeletal remains of an acrostic in the Hebrew (see also Robert Alter\u2019s post for this chapter). It begins with alef<\/em> and bet<\/em>, and despite some scrambling and omissions, the first half of the Hebrew aleph-bet, aleph<\/em> to kaf<\/em>, is covered.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. To be continued?<\/em> Many scholars see psalms 9 and 10 as essentially one psalm. Why? For one thing – Ps 10 has no heading, and the acrostic continues, as do many themes. Is the whole of Ps 10 appropriate as a continuation of Ps 9?
