Psalm 9:<\/p>\n

Author<\/em>:
\n<\/span>King David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/span><\/p>\n

When and Why:
\n<\/span><\/em>David wrote this psalm to thank God for saving him from a military enemy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Genre:<\/span><\/em>
\n<\/span>Psalm of Individual Lament–This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshiper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/span><\/p>\n

Psalm of Individual Thanksgiving–This psalm emphasizes gratitude for what God has done for the individual.<\/span><\/p>\n

Acrostic–A literary composition in which the writer has used the letters of the Hebrew alphabet in their order as the initial letters for a sequence of verses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:
\n<\/span><\/em>King David composed this psalm after having defeated his enemies who harassed the Israelites. He expresses his joy at the manifestation of God\u2019s presence in the affairs of this world, and in particular, in His judgement.\u00a0
\n<\/span>This psalm consists of twenty-one verses. As mentioned above, it is one of the psalms arranged in alphabetical order.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Technical Terminology<\/em>:\u00a0
\n<\/span>\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05a5\u05d5\u05bc\u05ea \u05dc\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b5\u0597\u05df–Al-mut Labain<\/em>–Upon the death of Labain–There are two major opinions as to what Al-mut Labain<\/em> means. The first is that it was a musical instruction to sing high pitched falsetto voice or Labain was a biblical personality. See explanation below.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim-When to Say:
\n<\/span><\/em>For an ill child–Verse 1 refers to \u201cmut laben<\/em>\u201d, which, as mentioned above, indicates a falsetto, yet alternatively may refer to a child on his deathbed.
\n<\/span>To be saved from enemies–Verse 4 states: \u201cWhen my enemies are turned back, they will stumble and perish.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:
\n<\/span><\/em>Verse 4 is found in the repetition of the Shmoneh Esrei<\/em> (Silent Meditation) of Rosh HaShanah.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Verse 9 is found in Kabbalat Shabbat (Friday night service), with a slight textual variation.
\n<\/span>Verse 11 is found in Pesukei Dezimra <\/em>(Introductory Verses of Praise to the Shacharit morning service).
\n<\/span>Verse 13 is a part of Av HaRachamim<\/em>, a memorial prayer recited just prior to Musaf on Shabbat.<\/span><\/p>\n

Biblical Personalities:
\n<\/span><\/em>Labain, a king who threatened Israel in the time of King David. David defeated him and offered this psalm of thanks to God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
