This Psalm features the grandeur of humanity that abides in spite of the magnificence of creation.<\/span><\/p>\n

When I see Your heavens, fashioned by Your fingers\u2014the moon and stars that You fixed in place; What is mortal man that you are mindful of him, humankind that You take note of him? You have made him slightly less than divine and crowned him with honor and glory. You have given him dominion over Your handiwork, laying the world at his feet. (4-7)<\/span><\/p>\n

Apropos of this description, I offer the following pedagogical insight and recommendation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The impressive and unforgettable lyrical nature of Psalms provides a valuable contrast with prose. Where the Torah merely speaks, however eloquently, Psalms rhapsodize. Since words of Torah are supposed to influence affect along with cognition, we should utilize Biblical poetry as a counterpoint to its prose, just as its own authors and editors sought to forestall the boredom of their readers through the judicious alternation of literary styles and genres.<\/span><\/p>\n

I would make the following recommendation to readers. Arrange the verses in Psalms in one column, phrase by phrase, and challenge yourself to match each poetic Psalm phrase with a corresponding prose passage from the Torah. Consider whether the correspondences are exact, where they differ, and whether there is a significant alteration or addition in Psalms to the Torah narrative.<\/span><\/p>\n

The result would begin this way:<\/span><\/p>\n
