How majestic is Your name throughout the earth, You Who have covered the heavens with Your splendor!\u201d (Psalm 8:2). Significantly, the first part of this verse is repeated at the end of this Psalm (verse 10), giving it a \u201ccircular\u201d literary form. This expression of God\u2019s overwhelming might is echoed in the poetic addition to the Kedushah recited on Festivals in the Ashkenazi rite: \u201cO Mighty One, our Mighty One (Adir Adirenu) how mighty is Your name throughout the earth!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is therefore surprising that verses from this Psalm should be put in the mouths of the angels when they are depicted as expressing opposition to God\u2019s will! According to Midrash Tehillim 8:2 in three instances God\u2019s angels argued against God\u2019s intentions. This first occurred when God consulted his heavenly courtiers about creating the first human being (see Genesis 1:26). They exclaimed: &#8220;What is man that You have been mindful of him, mortal man that You have taken note of him\u201d (8:5)?! God replied: Tomorrow you shall see how much more knowledgeable than you is Man. Then God asked the angels the names of each of the animals He had created, but they did not know. But when God asked Adam, he immediately named each animal (see Genesis 2:18-19)\u2026So God then asked Adam, And what is your name? He replied, It is appropriate to call me Adam, because I was created from the earth (Adamah). And God then asked Adam, What is My name? Adam replied, You are called the Lord, because You are the Lord of the entire world. And indeed God said: \u201cI am the Lord, that is My name\u201d (Isaiah 42:8).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, when Moses ascended to heaven to receive the Torah, the angels objected, saying: &#8220;What is man\u2026\u201d (Psalms 8:5)?! You should leave the Torah in heaven with us, for like the Torah we angels are holy and pure! We are immortal and the Torah is a \u201cTree of Life\u201d (see Proverbs 3:18)\u2026God replied, \u2018For that very reason you angels have no need of the Torah. For the Torah is intended to instruct mortal, imperfect mankind how to live.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, when God was about to cause His Shekhinah (\u201cDivine Presence\u201d) to dwell on earth among humans in the Desert Tabernacle, the angels again exclaimed: &#8220;What is man\u2026\u201d (8:5)?! God replied that His \u201cmajesty covers the skies, His splendor fills the earth\u201d (Habakkuk 3:3). The angels answered back, Then Your dwelling place shall be on earth?! God answered, I shall dwell both on the earth and in the heavens, as it says: \u201cO Lord, our Lord! How majestic is Your name throughout the earth\u201d and also \u201cYou Who have covered the heavens with Your splendor\u201d
