The word <\/span>shiggaion<\/em> <\/span>at the outset of this psalm is matched only by what appears to be its plural form, <\/span>shigionot<\/span><\/em>, appearing at the outset of the prayer (<\/span>tefillah<\/span><\/em>) of the Prophet Habakkuk (3:1). In both places it appears to be a musical notation or instruction, but in neither place is its specific identity patent. Hence, it invited considerable speculation by the exegetes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rashi opened with the opinion of the Spanish lexicographer Menachem ben Saruk, who identified it, like Se`adyah, as a musical instrument.\u00a0 Next, he cited a rabbinic interpretation (reflected in the Aramaic Targum Yonatan), that appears to have derived it from the root Sh-G-G, to err, and identified it as a psalm in which David begged forgiveness for his error in celebrating the fall of Saul (the <\/span>Cush ben Yemini<\/span><\/em> of v.1). He dismissed this, however, as unsuited for the context of the psalm and offered an alternative identification with the slaying of Yishbi of Nob (2 Samuel 21:16), a giant who posed a significant threat to David.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ibn Ezra, also, offered three opinions. The first derives it from the root S-G-H, to flourish, the second\u2014as in Rashi\u2014from Sh-G-G, to err, and the third, his choice, views it as a poetic notation similar, he stated, to those made by Spanish <\/span>paytanim<\/span><\/em> (liturgical poets) at the outset of their compositions. Radak concurred with the opinion that saw it as a musical notation, calling our attention to Habakkuk 3:1. In his identification of \u201cCush ben Yemini,\u201d he cited Ibn Ezra\u2019s identification of him as \u201ca Jew of the tribe of Benjamin whose name was Cush,\u201d calling it \u201cfarfetched\u201d (<\/span>hirchik me\u2019od<\/span><\/em>), preferring the rabbinic association with Saul.<\/span><\/p>\n

Malbim offered the following commentary:<\/span><\/p>\n

This Cush pursued David, taking with him a large band of warriors to do him battle. This turned out to be his undoing and he was hoist in his own petard (<\/span>b\u2019bor karah, bo nukash<\/span><\/em>)\u2026 When God observed their wicked deeds and weighed them against David\u2019s righteousness, His anger against David was turned against his foes.<\/span><\/p>\n
