He asks God for salvation from them, prays that God will vindicate him in judgement, and that his foes will be punished. He describes the differing fates of the righteous and the wicked:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGod vindicates the righteous; God pronounces doom each day. If one does not turn back, but whets his sword, bends his bow and aims it, then against himself he readies deadly weapons, and makes his arrows sharp.\u201d (Psalms 7:12-14)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doom is pronounced against those who aren\u2019t righteous, and if they don\u2019t turn back from their evil plans, their weapons may be used against themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last phrase, \u201cmakes his arrows sharp,\u201d is subject to some dispute. In Hebrew, the arrows are described as <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dolkim<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other translations say that he \u201cmakes arrows for the pursuers,\u201d and some commentators say that <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dolkim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0refer to burning or poisoned arrows. How does one word lead to so many interpretations?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is due to the verb <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dalak<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0having two meanings in biblical Hebrew. In about half the verses, it means \u201cto pursue, to chase\u201d, as in Genesis 31:36: \u201cWhat is my guilt that you should pursue me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the other half of the cases, it means \u201cto burn.\u201d This is the way it is used in Hebrew today, and is the root of such words and phrases as <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hadlakat nerot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u2013 \u201clighting candles,\u201d <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">delek<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u2013 \u201cfuel,\u201d and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">daleket<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0&#8211; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cinflammation\u201d (although it probably meant \u201cfever\u201d in the Bible.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a dispute among linguists as to the connection between the two meanings. Some say that the original meaning was to burn, and the concept of &#8220;chasing&#8221; came later &#8211; in the sense of &#8220;hot pursuit&#8221;, as we say in English.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another opinion is that the first meaning was &#8220;to chase&#8221;, and later came the idea of burning, because of the way the fire chases the wick of the candle. And then there are those who say that the two meanings aren\u2019t related, and come from different roots (as evidenced by cognates in other Semitic languages.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This ambiguity is the cause of the variety of translations. Some say that the arrows are pursuers, and others say that the arrows are burning (or poisoned, so burn when they enter the skin.) And some take advantage of the English phrase, and use both meanings \u2013 and for them, the arrows are in \u201chot
