Accordingly, the cryptic notations that accompany many of the psalms (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selah, almut, neginot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are either choral instructions or names of musical instruments that would accompany them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sh\u2019minit<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, arguably, would be either an eight-toned melody or an eight-stringed instrument.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, the Talmud reports: (Arakhin 13b)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabbi Yehudah said: The harp in the Temple had seven strings, as in: \u201cA fullness (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sova<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>`<\/em>) of happiness before You\u201d (16:11). Read it as seven (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sheva<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>`<\/em>) rather than fullness. That of the Messianic era will have eight, as in: \u201cTo the leader, on a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sh\u2019minit<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (12:1), meaning the eighth string. That of the World to Come will have ten, as in: \u201cUpon the ten-stringed instrument (`<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asor<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and lyre and singing to [the accompaniment of] a harp\u201d (92:4), and \u201cPraise the Lord with harp, and with a ten-stringed lyre sing to Him\u201d (33:2).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalm 6 is familiar to those whose daily prayer rituals include <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tachanun<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the quintessential supplication. Since it is recited (almost) daily, it behooves us to illuminate one of its more opaque verses: <em>`<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asheshah mi-ka`as `eini, `atekah be-khol tzorerai<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (8), translated as: \u201cMy eyes are wasted by vexation, worn out because of all my foes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">`<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ash<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a moth (see Isaiah 50:9), so, presumably, the verb <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">`-Sh-Sh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> literally means moth-eaten and, figuratively, worn out, paralleling <em>`<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atekah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from `<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atik<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> meaning old or ancient. Since the psalmist calls out to his evil-working foes to \u201cget away from me\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suru mimeni<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 9), one can only imagine that they had drawn near to him in his infirmity (3), probably to enjoy his
