Unless it is Shabbat, or a holiday, or the day before one of these, or the month of Nisan, or Tishrei, the Jewish prayer book for <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minchah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the afternoon service, includes a special short service called <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tachanun<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This mini-service is to be recited after the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amidah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the silent standing prayer, and before <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aleinu<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the concluding prayer. <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tachanun <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has four parts: Psalm Six; a three-part song called \u201cGuardian of Israel;\u201d the refrain of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avinu Malkeinu<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cOur Parent, Our Ruler;\u201d and a collection of verses from around the Bible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What has struck me in the past few months of Covid, never reciting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>minchah<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a minyan of nine other adult Jews, is the contrast between the individual cries of Psalm Six and the communal requests of the rest of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tachanun<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Psalm Six is profoundly singular: \u201csave ME;\u201d \u201cheal ME;\u201d \u201cdo not abandon ME;\u201d \u201cMY bones ache;\u201d \u201cMY pillow is drenched with tears.\u201d But after this lament, it is as if the tradition has an awakening to the realization that perhaps, in community, we might find salvation. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Avinu Malkeinu<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says: \u201cOUR Parent, OUR Ruler, be gracious to US and answer US, for WE are devoid of deeds; deal with US in loving righteousness and save US.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, all the verses in the final collection are all phrased in the first-person plural. We transition from the desperation of our lonely sinfulness and anguish to the promise of being jointly redeemed and saved. Even saying <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>tachanun<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during Covid, I have found solace in this communal language. I can hear the deeply profound voice of the tradition speaking an honest but ultimately consoling message.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our suffering as individuals are real and painful.\u00a0 Yet we, as a community \u2013 Jewish, and human \u2013 will
