He is the epitome of the Italian Renaissance, and opens the period of the Baroque.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monteverdi was mainly a composer of music for words &#8211; the sound of the word, the structure of poetic sentences, and the emotions behind it all, determined for him the melody, the tone and the form and structure of the work. This composition is based on the first four verses of Psalm 6, and the spirit of contrition and repentance are evident in the serious cast of the music. Though the work is classed as a \u201cmotet\u201d (religious music) for six voices and a Latin text, it is very reminiscent of the early madrigals (secular multi-vocal songs of the Renaissance) of the composer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monteverdi appears here as intentionally conservative, spare with complicated musical and vocal effects, apparently because the work was intended for amateur performers.
