David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When and Why:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David wrote this psalm after recovering from a serious sickness<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Genre<\/em>:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalm of Individual Lament&#8211; This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chapter Summary:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David composed this psalm in the midst of his illness and pain, and thus prays for deliverance and life. He also addresses his enemies: \u201cAshamed and utterly terrified will all my foes be, they will return and be instantaneously ashamed.\u201d Likewise, he hints at the suffering and martyrdom of the Jewish people throughout the ages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This psalm consists of eleven verses, subdivided into three parts.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 1 serves as a heading.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verses 2-6, King David addresses his supplications directly to God.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verses 7-9, he describes his grief as if talking to himself.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verses 9-11, he speaks out against his enemies and commands them to depart from his midst.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shimush Tehillim&#8211;When to Say This Psalm<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For troubles at sea or on land&#8211;the letters <em>yud-shin-ayin-yud<\/em>&#8211;constituting the word \u201c<em>yishi<\/em>\u201d&#8211;\u201dmy savior\u201d&#8211;are alluded to in the following verses: <em>yud<\/em> from the name of God in verse 2&#8211; \u201cDo not rebuke me with Your anger, nor chastise me with Your rage.\u201d; <em>shin<\/em> from \u201c<em>shuva<\/em>\u201d in verse 5&#8211; \u201cfree my soul, deliver me for the sake of your lovingkindness\u201d; <em>ayin <\/em>from \u201c<em>asheshah<\/em>\u201d in verse 8&#8211; \u201cMy eye is dimmed from anger, it has aged because of my tormentors.\u201d; <em>yud<\/em> from \u201c<em>yeivoshu<\/em>\u201d in verse 11&#8211; \u201cAshamed and utterly terrified will all my foes be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where in the Siddur:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verses 2-11 constitute the Tachanun (Supplication Prayer), recited after Shemoneh Esrei (Silent Meditation).<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 5 is found in the Vidui (Confession Prayer), recited on various occasions throughout the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excerpted from <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Your Lips To God\u2019s Ears<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by Reuben Ebrahimoff available on Amazon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","image":{"ID":79908,"id":79908,"title":"psalms -
