On the debit side of the ledger, so to speak, are: (5) wickedness and evil; (6) boasters, all workers of iniquity; (7) they that speak falsehood, the man of blood and of deceit. On their account, the righteous psalmist feels himself imperiled. He senses that his foes lay in wait for him, and he appeals to God to help him find the right path that would lead him around their ambush (9). Even worse, from his perspective, is their hypocrisy. In a particularly figurative passage, he describes their perfidy: \u201cFor there is no sincerity in their mouth; their inward part is a yawning gulf, their throat is an open sepulcher; they make smooth their tongue\u201d (10).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, whereas the two immediately previous psalms invoke the evening, this one evokes the dawn. Instead of, \u201cI lay down in bed and went to sleep\u201d (3:6) and, \u201cSafe and sound I lay me down to sleep\u201d (4:9), here we encounter: \u201cHear my voice, O LORD, at daybreak\u201d (5:4). Small wonder, then, that the standard traditional morning prayer service (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shacharit<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) incorporates a continuing verse: \u201cBut I, through Your abundant love, enter Your house; I bow down in awe at Your holy temple\u201d (8).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet another link to prayer can be found in the several liturgical terms of request and entreaty that abound in the chapter, including <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ha\u2019azinah <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(\u201cgive ear\u201d)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, binah hagigi <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(\u201cconsider my utterance\u201d)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, hakshiva le-kol shav`I <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(\u201cheed the sound of my cry\u201d)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ki eilekha etpallal <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(\u201cfor I pray to you\u201d)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tishma` koli <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(\u201chear my voice\u201d)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, e`erokh lekha va\u2019atzapeh <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(\u201cI plead before you and wait\u201d). Moreover, the sequence we delineated in the opening paragraph\u2014in which the psalmist\u2019s admiration of God\u2019s rejection of evil in all its forms precedes his plea for His assistance\u2014conforms to the liturgical principle formulated by Rabbi Simlai: \u201cOne should always recite the praises of the Holy One, Blessed be He, before engaging in prayer\u201d (Berakhot
