His long life encompassed much of English history &#8211; from Henry VII to Queen Elizabeth I. His main position was in the ancient cathedral of Canterbury, and though he was a loyal Catholic, he survived the upheavals that the English Church experienced in that period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the wake of the reform of the Anglican Church, prayers were \u201crewritten\u201d from Latin to English. Psalms, too, underwent a process of popularization into the spoken language, necessitating adaptations of meter and rhyme &#8211; a process shared by all the Reformist churches of Europe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tallis dedicated a collection of nine such psalms to the first Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury, Matthew Parker. Each one of the psalms is written in a different modal key, such that the composition also has great music-theoretic value.
