David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When &amp; Why<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This psalm was written to be read aloud immediately before a battle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genre<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalm of Individual Lament &#8211; This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshiper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summary<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">King David declares his trust in God who watches over the righteous and admonishes the wicked. He asks for Divine guidance to smooth the way before him, and calls for retribution of the wicked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This psalm consists of thirteen verses, subdivided into three parts.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 1 serves as an introduction.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verses 2-4, the Psalmist accepts God as King and Lord, and asks that his prayer be accepted.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verses 5-8, he further praises God for hiding his face from the wicked and drawing close those who fear Him.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verses 9-13, King David requests that God lead him in the path of righteousness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introductory Words:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05dc\u05b7\u05de\u05b0\u05e0\u05b7\u05e6\u05bc\u05b5\u05a5\u05d7\u05b7 &#8212; <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lamnatsei\u2019ach<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8212; To the Conductor<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05de\u05b4\u05d6\u05b0\u05de\u05a5\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8 &#8212; <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mizmor <\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Musical Accompaniment<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Musical Instrument:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05e0\u05bc\u05b0\u05d7\u05b4\u05d9\u05dc\u0597\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea &#8212; <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nechilot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8212; A type of Flute<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shimush Tehillim-When to Say This Psalm<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For being pursued by an evil spirit&#8211;Verse 5 states that God does not desire any evil, nor does he want it to dwell in man\u2019s midst. In verse 12, the Psalmist writes: \u201cAnd they will rejoice, all who take refuge in You.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For being liked by an authority or boss&#8211;Verse 12 adds: \u201cand they will exalt in You, who love your Name.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where in the Siddur:<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verses 2 &amp; 3 are a part of the <em>Selichot<\/em> (Penitential Service) recited in the evenings leading up to Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 8 comprises the second verse of Ma Tovu, recited during the Birchot HaShachar (Morning Blessings).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biblical Places:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05d4\u05bd\u05b5\u05d9\u05db\u05b7\u05dc&#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Heichal<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8212; Holy Temple, a term used to refer to the inner sanctuary of the Temple in Jerusalem. The <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heichal <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contained the Holy of Holies, the resting place of the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aron Hakodesh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Holy Ark)*. It also housed the Menorah, Altar of Incense, and Table of the Showbread.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*The <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aron Hakodesh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while present in the first Temple, was buried, and hence its location was not known, during the period of the second Temple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talmud on Tehillim<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 8: \u201cAs for me, through Your abundant kindness I will enter Your house; I will prostrate myself toward Your Holy Sanctuary in awe of You.\u201d The Talmud, Berachot 30b, teaches that one should not rise to pray the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Shemoneh Esrei<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Silent Meditation) except out of an attitude of reverence.
