I know about the recommendations from sleep experts to disconnect from technology before going to bed (though admittedly rarely achieve it), and the various bedtime rituals of not eating after a certain hour and meditating to calm the mind, yet the ability to slow down my thoughts of the day and all that didn\u2019t get done evades me. This chapter, however, includes David\u2019s, and Judaism\u2019s recipe for ending the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While on the run, David must surely have questioned his purpose and future. Nevertheless, or perhaps because of that, at the end of the day\u05ea David takes time to reaffirm his relationship with God. As our sages explain, David is \u201cat peace\u201d not just because he knows unequivocally that God is protecting him but because he concludes each day by forgiving those who have wronged him. He lets go of his grudges and gives up his troubles to God. And so, he is in harmony with himself and the world around him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The third century Amora, Rav Assi asserted that, although the text of the Shema prayer originates in the Book of Deuteronomy, this very chapter of Psalms is the biblical source for the practice of reciting the Shema at bedtime: \u201cSo tremble, and sin no more, ponder it on your bed and sigh (4:5).\u201d\u00a0 That very same bedtime Shema proclaims, \u201cPraised are You, God, who rules the universe, bringing sleep to my eyes and slumber to my eyelids\u201d and asks that we may \u201clie down in peace and awaken in peace\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through this bedtime prayer, by separating the activities, troubles and worries of the day, to focus all his attention on reaffirming his relationship with God, David was able to achieve his sense of peace and harmony, his oneness with God. There\u2019s no technology, no distraction, no rehashing of the day. Simply letting go with the knowledge that \u201cyou alone, God can keep me safe (4:9).\u201d That is the prescription for a good night\u2019s sleep, and I need to step up my
