Just what these terms mean, however, is moot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Aramaic Targum Yonatan, representing\u2014perhaps\u2014the most venerable Jewish interpretive tradition, rendered the verse as: \u201cFor praise, with melodies, a hymn of David.\u201d Rashi\u2019s interpretation is: \u201cThis psalm was composed by David to be recited by the Levites who vigorously engaged in song on the [Temple] platform<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The verb N-Tz-Ch describes those who engage vigorously in activity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two alternatives were offered by Ibn Ezra. The first, citing Se`adyah Gaon, relates it to the word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">netzach<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, interpreting it as: \u201cDavid delivered it to one of the musicians to play it repeatedly.\u201d The second, citing \u201cothers\u201d (and with which he concurs), interprets <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>menatzei\u2019ach<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as \u201cthe officer in charge of the musicians.\u201d (In modern Hebrew, it designates the conductor of an orchestra.) Moreover, said Ibn Ezra, there was no need to name him because \u201che was well-known.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for the instrumentation, Ibn Ezra had the following to say:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[The plural] <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neginot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> signifies that it had two melodies. Others say there was a musical instrument called <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neginot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In my opinion, there were, among Israelites, many tunes and melodies. <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neginot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at the outset of a psalm, indicates its melody; likewise, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ma`alot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Ps. 120, 121), <em>`<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">almot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (46), <em>\u2018<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ayelet ha-shachar<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (22), <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yonat \u2018elem<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (56) and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">machalat<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (53, 88).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibn Ezra\u2019s list of instruments and other musical directions is only partial; a more thorough listing is included in the commentary of Radak. Malbim added yet another dimension to our understanding of psalms as performance-based by noting that our psalm consists of three parts, with the word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicating the end of a \u201cstanza\u201d after verses 3 and 5.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":80070,"id":80070,"title":"ps4-david
