Grzegorz Gorczycki (1665-1734): \u201cAnswer Me When I Call\u201d from the night prayers, <\/span>Completorium – Cum invocarem<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Polish Handel,\u201d as he was called in his day, was born in Silesia and lived most of his adult life in Krakow. Music wasn\u2019t his only occupation, as he was a full-time Catholic priest, who was known for his extensive works of charity. The sources of his musical education are not known, but he did graduate the universities of Prague and Vienna, where he studied philosophy and theology, which he also taught later in life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When he arrived in Krakow he was appointed teacher, while also acting as music director for the cathedral of the city. Though he was widely admired during his life, and known for his church compositions also after his death, scholarly research on his work only developed in the second half of the 20th century, when other works of his were discovered, compositions that revealed the influence of the Italian Baroque, which had been hitherto unknown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Completorium<\/em> <\/span>(night prayer) was discovered in the 60s, and it is impressive in its scope and in its integration of orchestral and choral performance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The work here is based on Psalm 4, and sung in Latin. Despite the uniformity in harmony and rhythm, the composition is interesting in the combinations of voices, the dialogues between vocal and instrumental parts, and in particular, the spectacular use of trumpets which are indeed reminiscent of the music of Handel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
