David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>When &amp; Why<\/em>:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David wrote this psalm after he was betrayed and his location was revealed to Saul.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Genre<\/em>:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalm of Individual Lament: This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cried out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending in an expression of trust.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Chapter Summary<\/em>:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">King David joyously thanks God for his kindness. Although engulfed in troubles and surrounded by the vindictiveness of his enemies, he strives to rise above despair and rejoice in the Divine Presence. He admonishes his enemies and advises them to repent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This psalm consists of nine verses, subdivided into three parts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 1 serves as a heading.\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verse 2, King David addresses God.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verses 3-6, he addresses \u201cthe children of great men\u201d.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verses 7-9, he turns once again to God addressing him in the more intimate second person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Introductory Words<\/em>:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05dc\u05b7\u05de\u05b0\u05e0\u05b7\u05e6\u05bc\u05b5\u05a5\u05d7\u05b7&#8211; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lamnatsei\u2019ach <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-To the Conductor<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05de\u05b4\u05d6\u05b0\u05de\u05a5\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8&#8211; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mizmor &#8211; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Musical Accompaniment<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Technical Terminology<\/em>:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05e0\u05b0\u05d2\u05b4\u05d9\u05e0\u0597\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea&#8211; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niginot <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-Tunes<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05e1\u05b6\u05bd\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4&#8211; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211;While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar opinion is that it is a musical notation, instructing the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. Alternatively, \u201cSelah\u201d may mean \u201ceverlasting\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Shimush Tehillim<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; When to Say<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For success against other people (recite every morning)<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a request to be granted from others (recite seven times)&#8211; Verse 2 requests of God to accept one\u2019s general petitions. Verse 5 asks that one\u2019s opponents should realize that he is correct. Finally, verse 9 asks for one to be able to rest assured.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Where in the Siddur<\/em>:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 5 is part of the prayers of the bedtime Shema.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 7 is part of the \u201cPrayer for Sustenance\u201d recited by some on the High Holidays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Talmud on Tehillim<\/em>:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 5: \u201cTremble and do not sin, reflect in your hearts upon your bed, and be still Selah.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Talmud, Berachot 5a, teaches us that a person should constantly agitate his good inclination to fight against his evil inclination. The root of the word \u201c<em>rigzu<\/em>\u201d&#8211;\u201dtremble\u201d also connotes anger. While anger is usually a bad trait, it does have its proper place too; one should vent his anger against his evil inclination, because anger can prevent sin.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Talmud, Pesachim 119a, interprets the verse to mean: \u201cRecite it &#8212; \u201cin your heart\u201d, &#8212; \u201con your beds\u201d, and then &#8212; \u201cbe utterly silent\u201d and (immediately) fall asleep after reciting these words.
