The third chapter of Psalms is the first one that provides its own context.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

King David is running from the revolt led by his son Absalom in II Samuel 15-19. It is also the first psalm to list David as the author. In the penultimate verse of the psalm, David asks God “Rise up, God, save me my lord, because you slap my enemies in the cheek (<\/span>lechi<\/span><\/em>) and you broke the teeth of the wicked.”\u00a0 The focus on the face and mouth is telling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

King David was known as a great warrior and strong military man, as we saw throughout our study of II Samuel.\u00a0 At the same time he is also known for his poetic acumen as seen in the psalms attributed to him. With this verse, King David combines both. The physical is expressed by the violence of the verse- punching and smashing. The verbal side is symbolized by the blow to the cheek and to the teeth- both used to talk. David is asking God to help him maintain this advantage over his
