Our chapter opens with a superscription that identifies the circumstances under which this Psalm was composed: \u201cA psalm of David when he fled from his son Absalom.\u201d<\/span> This historical situation is described in<\/span> II Samuel 15:13-31<\/span><\/a>. We can readily imagine the poet-king David praying at this difficult time: \u201cO Lord, my foes are so many! Many are those who attack me. Many say of me, \u2018There is no deliverance for him through God\u2019. <\/span>Selah<\/span><\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/i> (3:2-3). A triumphant converse of the phrase: \u201cThere is no deliverance for him through God\u201d, concludes our Psalm: \u201cDeliverance is the Lord\u2019s. Your blessing be upon Your people! <\/span>Selah<\/span><\/i>\u201d (3:9).<\/span><\/p>\n

Rashi on Psalms 3:9<\/span><\/a> interprets \u201cDeliverance is the Lord\u2019s\u201d to suggest that it is upon God to deliver His servants. And it is upon His people to bless and thank Him.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rabbi Yosef Hayyim (the Sephardi <\/span>Hakham<\/span><\/em> of Bagdad, who died in 1909), better known as the Ben Ish Hai, in his<\/span> Halachot 1st Year Terumah Introduction 5<\/span><\/a> asserts that deliverance will come through the merit of prayer, for the expression \u201cDeliverance is the Lord\u2019s\u201d refers to the future Redemption.<\/span><\/p>\n

Midrash Exodus Rabbah 30:24<\/span><\/a> employs the phrase \u201cDeliverance is the Lord\u2019s\u201d to elaborate on the future \u201cDeliverance \u2013 <\/span>Yeshuah<\/span><\/em>\u201d. So, it is with Israel in this world. He who obeys the commandments knows not their reward. But when they see the reward of the commandments in the World to Come, they will be amazed. For the whole world will not be able to imagine the future reward. As it says: \u201cSuch things had never been heard or noted. No eye has seen [them], O God, but You, Who act for those who trust in You\u201d (<\/span>Isaiah 64:3<\/span><\/a>). But, have people indeed never heard of the future reward?! Rather, it means that in this world, people are not capable of conceiving how great the reward of final deliverance will be, as it says: \u201cFor soon My salvation shall come, and My deliverance be revealed\u201d (<\/span>Isaiah 56:1<\/span><\/a>). And furthermore, the Holy One, Blessed be He, promises, I am the One who brings deliverance, as it says: \u201cDeliverance is the Lord\u2019s\u201d (<\/span>Psalms 3:9<\/span><\/a>). By doing justice, we assist God in bringing deliverance near!<\/span><\/p>\n

To this day, our Psalm is included in the Recitation of the Shema at Bedtime \u2013 <\/span>Qeri\u2019at Shema \u2018al Ha-Mitah<\/span><\/em>, apparently due to the highly appropriate verse: \u201cI lie down and sleep and wake again, for the Lord sustains me\u201d (<\/span>Psalms 3:9<\/span><\/a>). The Ben Ish Hai (<\/span>Halachot 1st Year Pekudei 11<\/span><\/a>) states that one must be careful to end the day with this final recitation of the Shema — one of the four daily statutory recitations of the Shema \u2013 together with all its associated Scriptural
