David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>When &amp; Why<\/em>:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David wrote this psalm after he escaped from his son Absalom, who was attempting to usurp David\u2019s throne. David stresses his belief that God will save him from Absalom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Genre<\/em>:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalm of Individual Lament &#8211; This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Chapter Summary<\/em>:<br \/>\n<\/span>This psalm relates David\u2019s unwavering trust in God even while his son Absalom drove him from his throne and pursued him. It is intended to instill hope in one\u2019s heart in the face of tragedy, for it is God\u2019s decision to free us, not ours.<\/p>\n<p>The Psalm consists of nine verses, subdivided into three parts.<br \/>\nVerse 1 serves as an introduction, and refers to King David fleeing from his son ABsalom.<br \/>\nIn verses 2 &amp; 3, the Psalmist expands upon his trouble and personal struggle.<br \/>\nIn verses 4-7, he describes his trust in God to deliver him.<br \/>\nIn verses 8 &amp; 9, he further beseeches the Almighty to save him.<\/p>\n<p><em>Technical Terminology:<\/em><br \/>\nSelah-Verse 3 contains the first appearance of the word \u201cselah\u201d in the Book of Tehillim. It occurs 71 times, most often as the last word of a psalm. While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar opinion is that is a musical notation, instruction a Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. Alternatively, \u201cselah\u201d may mean \u201ceverlasting\u201d. <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Shimush Tehillim-When to Say This Psalm<\/em>:<br \/>\n<\/span>For a Headache&#8211; Verse 4 asks God to protect one\u2019s honor and lift up his head.<br \/>\nFor a Shoulderache&#8211; Verse 6 expresses one\u2019s ability to wake up from sleep, as it is God who sustains him.<\/p>\n<p><em>Where in the Siddur:<\/em><br \/>\nVerses 2-9 are part of the prayers of the bedtime Shema.<br \/>\nVerse 9 comprises the eighth verse of V\u2019hu <em>Rachum of Pesukei Dezimra<\/em> (introductory Verses of Praise to the Shacharit morning service).<br \/>\nVerse 9 is also found in the <em>Motza\u2019ei Shabbat<\/em> (Saturday night) Havdalah service.<\/p>\n<p><em>Biblical Personalities:<\/em><br \/>\n\u05d0\u05d1\ufb2a\u05dc\u05d5\u05dd&#8211;Absalom&#8211;King David\u2019s son, who attempted to seize the throne from his father and was killed in battle fighting against his father\u2019s army.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Talmud on Tehillim<\/em>:<br \/>\n<\/span>Verse 8: \u201c\u05e9\u05e0\u05d9 \u05e8\u05e9\u05e2\u05d9\u05dd \u05e9\u05d1\u05e8\u05ea\u201d&#8211; \u201cthe teeth of the wicked, You have broken.\u201d<br \/>\nThe Talmud, Berachot 54b, reinterprets this to be read not only as \u201c<em>shibarta<\/em>\u201d&#8211; \u201cyou have broken\u201d, but also as \u201c<em>shirbavta<\/em>\u201d &#8212; \u201cyou have extended\u201d. The implication, by way of allegory, is that Moses was ten <em>amot<\/em> (cubits) tall.
