The 3<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century BCE Jewish Septuagint renders the Hebrew with a Greek expression that may be conveyed in English as \u201caccept correction\u201d. The Latin Vulgate has \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adprehendite disciplinam<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8212; embrace discipline\u201d. The New JPS translation (1999) of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Psalms.2.12?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalm 2:12<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers \u201cpay homage in good faith\u201d, but notes that the meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The difficulty of translating this expression is due to the various meanings of the word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bar<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most likely, this word should be understood as meaning \u201cpure\u201d, as in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Psalms.24.4?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalms 24:4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This yields a translation of the expression <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nashqu bar<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to mean \u201ckiss (or embrace) that which is pure\u201d. However, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bar<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also means \u201cson\u201d, though only in later Biblical Hebrew, as an Aramaism. Nevertheless, this lead Protestant Christians, since the time of Calvin and Luther in the 16<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century to misinterpret <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nashqu bar<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to mean \u201cKiss the Son\u201d i.e. \u201cEmbrace Christ as the Son of God\u201d. A similar interpretation had already been suggested in the 14<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century Middle English Bible translations that were made under the direction of John Wycliffe. This influenced the 17<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century King James (\u201cAuthorized\u201d) version that has been retained in many English translations to this day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Bereishit_Rabbah.83.5?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=bi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midrash Bereshit Rabbah 83:5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and parallels preserve an engaging interpretation of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nashqu<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bar<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> embedded in an agricultural parable. The straw, the hay and the chaff were arguing among themselves, each one claiming, \u201cthe world was created only for my sake!\u201d The wheat interjected \u201cjust wait until you come to the threshing floor, then we will all know for whom the field was planted.\u201d At the time of threshing, the farmer winnowed the chaff away in the wind and left the straw on the ground, and he burned the leftover stubble of hay. But, the wheat he gathered into a mound<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And everyone who would see the wheat would kiss it, as it says: \u201ckiss the (pure) grain\u201d (Psalms 2:12) [that can now be made into bread].\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the same way, the Nations of the World each claim, I am most important and for me the world was created. But Israel says to them, just you wait for the Day that is coming when we will know for whom the world was indeed created. About this Day it is written: \u201cFor lo! That Day is at hand, burning like an oven. All the arrogant and all the doers of evil shall be straw, and the day that is coming\u2014said the Lord of Hosts\u2014shall burn them to ashes\u2026\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Malachi.3.19?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malachi 3:19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). And further it is written: \u201cYou shall winnow them, and the wind shall carry them off. The whirlwind shall scatter them\u2026\u201d But in the continuation of this verse, God promises Israel: \u201c\u2026You shall rejoice in the Lord, and glory in the Holy One of Israel\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Isaiah.41.16?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah 41:16<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:
