  1. Past, present or future<\/em>? Do the coronation and the rebellion discussed in the psalm reflect actual historical events in the days of King David? Solomon? Perhaps from the days of Jehoshaphat? Achaz? Hizkiyahu? Alexander Yannai? Or is it perhaps meant to be understood as occurring in the future – the end of days and the messianic era? All options are possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Messiah and prince<\/em>. The messiah of verse 2 is he who has been anointed to his position, just like the king \u201cinstalled\u201d in verse 6. The act of anointing with oil (<\/span>nisuch<\/span><\/em>)<\/span><\/i> on the head of the chosen (thus \u201cinstalling\u201d them) left its mark in the names of some of the positions (<\/span>nasich<\/span><\/em> – \u201cprince\u201d).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Son of (a) God<\/em>. The connection between the king and God as a connection between father and son is a familiar idea in the cultures of the ancient Near East (and not only). There is a wide variety of meanings to this idea – from mere metaphor, through a dialogic encounter between the two, to the ascription of actual divine qualities to the king.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Who is worshiped?<\/em> Who are the peoples subservient to:\u00a0 the kingship (verses 8-9), or to God (verse 11)? Sometimes in this psalm it seems like the same thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Closing the circle<\/em>. Psalm1 opens with \u201chappy is the man,\u201d and psalm 2 closes with \u201chappy are all who take refuge in Him.\u201d This has led some to connect the two compositions, despite their different content and themes.
