Psalm 2:<\/span><\/p>\n

Author<\/em>:<\/span>
\n<\/span>Unknown, perhaps \u05d3\u05d5\u05d3 \u05d4\u05de\u05dc\u05da–King David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/span><\/p>\n

When & Why<\/em>:<\/span>
\n<\/span>David might have written this psalm at the time of his inauguration, encouraging the Israelites to respect the new king, who is God\u2019s anointed one.<\/span><\/p>\n

Genre<\/em>:<\/span>
\n<\/span>Psalm of Royalty – This psalm describes how God reigns supreme. It focuses on the human king of Israel, or upon God as king of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chapter Summary<\/em>:<\/span>
\n<\/span>This psalm speaks of the suffering that befell the author, symbolizing and anticipating the sufferings of both the individual Jew and the Jewish People throughout the generations. It seeks to inspire the Jew with hope and strength during the long exile, until the arrival of the Mashiach (Messiah).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This psalm consists of twelve verses, subdivided into four parts.<\/span>
\n<\/span>In verses 1-3, the nations of the world shout out against God and his anointed.<\/span>
\n<\/span>In verses 4-6, God speaks to the nations.<\/span>
\n<\/span>In verses 7-9, the psalmist speaks of and relates God\u2019s words to him.<\/span>
\n<\/span>In verses 10-12, the psalmist himself addresses the nations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim-When to Say This Psalm<\/em>:<\/span>
\n<\/span>For a Headache–Verse 9 refers to \u201cBreak them with a rod of iron, as a potter\u2019s vessel, shatter them.\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span>For a Stormy Sea–Verse 12 exhorts the reader to \u201cDo homage in purity [of heart], lest He be angry and you will be lost on your way, for His wrath is kindled suddenly; fortunate are all who take refuge in Him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Biblical Places<\/em>:<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u05e6\u05d9\u05d5\u05df-Zion-often used as a synonym for Jerusalem. The term Zion originally referred only to the area where a Jebbusite fortress once stood, also the location of the City of David. Zion was later used by prophets and psalmists as another name for the expanded Jerusalem.<\/span><\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim<\/em>:<\/span>
\n<\/span>Verse 7: \u201c\u05d0\u05e1\u05e4\u05e8\u05d4 \u05d0\u05dc-\u05d7\u05e7\u201d — \u201cI will tell of the decree.\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span>The Talmud, Sukkah 52a, relates this verse to the Mashiach (Messiah), the descendant of David.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
