{"id":79945,"date":"2020-09-14T05:36:45","date_gmt":"2020-09-14T02:36:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=79945"},"modified":"2020-09-14T05:36:45","modified_gmt":"2020-09-14T02:36:45","slug":"psalms-at-the-opera","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/psalms-at-the-opera\/","title":{"rendered":"Psalms At The Opera"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[],"acf":{"old_id":"79945","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":79834,"related_cahpter":"569","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_create_date":"","old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"A new series - this time: Handel\r\n\r\n","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Messiah, Chorus by George Frideric Handel (1685 &#8211; 1759) : <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let Us Break Their Bonds Asunder<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, (Tafelmusik 2012), with the Messiah from Psalm 2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The oratorio <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Messiah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was written by Handel in London in 1741 in English.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Towards the end of the second part of the composition Handel includes the first four, and the ninth, verses of Psalm 2, as he stages the events just like in an opera, but in an interpretation that varies from the Jewish understanding of the psalm: the nations do battle with God and his anointed son, essentially rejecting the Christian Gospel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The chorus sings the rebellious words of the nations (\u201cLet us break their bonds asunder\u201d) in a series of imitations: the motif of \u201cLet us\u201d wanders among the different voices, as if the scheme is being passed on from person to person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This genre of the voices of the \u201cmasses\u201d comes from the tradition of the Passion (the description of the suffering of Jesus and his death) of the Baroque period, but here before us is a rather long choral piece, particularly virtuosic and challenging in its performance.
