{"id":79927,"date":"2020-09-13T17:06:39","date_gmt":"2020-09-13T14:06:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=79927"},"modified":"2020-09-13T17:06:39","modified_gmt":"2020-09-13T14:06:39","slug":"the-unnamed-righteous-and-the-unnamed-wicked","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/the-unnamed-righteous-and-the-unnamed-wicked\/","title":{"rendered":"The Unnamed Righteous And The Unnamed Wicked"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[],"acf":{"old_id":"79927","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":33877,"related_cahpter":"568","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_create_date":"","old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"The midrash tells us who they were\u00a0\r\n\r\n","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our chapter, the beginning of Psalms, together with the following chapter, are considered a single section, according to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Berakhot.9b?lang=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talmud Bavli Berakhot 9b-10a<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, beginning: \u201cHappy [<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ashrey<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] is the man who has not followed the counsel of the wicked\u2026but the way of the wicked is doomed\u201d (Psalms 1:1-6) and ending: \u201cHappy [<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ashrey<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] are all those who take refuge in Him\u201d (Psalms 2:12).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is typical of Rabbinic Midrash to assign specific identities to unnamed persons mentioned in the Biblical text.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Bereishit_Rabbah.26?lang=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midrash Genesis Rabbah 26:1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> interprets the unnamed righteous and wicked referred to in the beginning of our chapter as referring to Noah and his generation. \u201cHappy is the man who has not followed the counsel of the wicked\u201d refers to Noah. The \u201cwicked\u201d refers to the Generation of Enosh (see<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Genesis.4.26?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genesis 4:26<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Mishneh_Torah%2C_Foreign_Worship_and_Customs_of_the_Nations.1?lang=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maimonides, Mishneh Torah, Foreign Worship 1:1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). \u201cOr taken the path of sinners\u201d (Psalms 1:1) refers to the Generation of the Flood. \u201cOr joined the company of the insolent\u201d (verse 1) refers to the Generation of the Tower of Babel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe teaching of the Lord is his delight\u201d (verse 2) refers to Noah who was given seven commandments (see<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Mishneh_Torah%2C_Kings_and_Wars.9?lang=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maimonides, Mishneh Torah, Kings and Wars 9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). \u201cAnd he studied Torah day and night\u201d (verse 2) \u2013 Noah derived one Torah teaching from another Torah teaching. For example, he reasoned that God commanded he save more \u201cclean animals \u2013 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tehorim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d than \u201cunclean animals \u2013 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">temeyim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (see<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Genesis.7.2?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genesis 7:2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), because the \u201cclean animals\u201d were intended for sacrifice (see<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Genesis.8?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genesis 8:20<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). \u201cHe is like a tree planted beside streams of water\u201d (verse 3) \u2013 Like Noah, whom the Holy One planted in the Ark. \u201cWhich yields its fruit in season\u201d \u2013 this refers to Seth. \u201cAnd whose foliage never fades\u201d \u2013 this refers to Ham. \u201cAnd whatever he produces thrives\u201d \u2013 this refers to Japheth
