Psalm 1:<\/span><\/p>\n

Author: <\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>Unknown, perhaps King David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/span><\/p>\n

Genre: <\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>Psalm of Wisdom — The psalm contains teachings and wise advice and is meant to instruct people on how to live a Godly life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/em>This psalm, along with the following one, serves as an introduction to the entire Sefer Tehilim (Book of Psalms) Together they are described in the Talmud (Berachot 9B) as one unit, and in fact, only at a later date were subdivided into two separate chapters.<\/span><\/p>\n

The psalmist, in this introduction, reveals to us the golden rule for spiritual success: only one who departs from evil and does good is truly happy and firmly rooted. The first verse explains it all: \u201cFortunate is the man who has not walked in the counsel of the wicked, and in the way of the sinful he has not stood, and in the seat of the scornful he has not sat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The psalm consists of six verses, subdivided into three parts.<\/span><\/p>\n

In verses 1 & 2, the psalmist speaks of the differences between the deeds of the righteous and those of the wicked.<\/span><\/p>\n

In verses 3 & 4, he contrasts the righteous and the wicked by way of a simile. The righteous and their deeds are compared to a fruit-bearing tree while the wicked and their deeds are compared to valueless chaff blown away by the wind.<\/span><\/p>\n

In verses 5 & 6, he describes the rewards to be reaped by the righteous and the punishment to be exacted upon the wicked.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim-When to Say This Psalm:<\/span><\/em>
\n<\/span>To prevent miscarriage–Verse 3 refers to a tree which produces fruit in its natural time. <\/span>
\n<\/span>Similarly, a person who is dedicated to righteousness will see the fruits of his\/her labor in a timely fashion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim:<\/span><\/em>
\n<\/span>Verse 1: \u201c\u05d0\u05e9\u05e8\u05d9\u201d– \u201cAshrei\u201d<\/em>— \u201cFortunate; Praiseworthy; Happy\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span>The Talmud, Berachot 10a, states: \u201cAny chapter [of Psalms] that was especially dear to King David, he opened with a verse containing the word \u05d0\u05e9\u05e8\u05d9 (Fortunate), and\/or concluded with a verse containing the word \u05d0\u05e9\u05e8\u05d9 (Fortunate)\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
