  1. Why do we begin with the first?<\/em> Why is Psalm 1 the opening chapter of the book? Perhaps it is because of the opening words \u201cHappy is the man\u201d that shift the focus to the individual, whose voice we will be hearing throughout the book. Perhaps in order to establish at the outset the choice of the path. Perhaps because of the belief in reward and punishment, which is an important component in the relationship between a person and God, and is behind much of the discourse that we will find here. And perhaps in order to open with a pastoral scene of the good, the tranquil and the stable – a picture which will also be contradicted later on in the book. And perhaps for other reasons as well.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Choosing to connect<\/em>. \u201cHappy is the man\u201d who chooses (<\/span>bocher<\/span><\/em>)<\/span><\/i> what he connects to (<\/span>mitchaber<\/span><\/em>)<\/span><\/i>. He\u2019s not dragged along. He clarifies for himself what is his \u201cdelight\u201d (verse 2), and conducts himself accordingly. Happy indeed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Echoes.<\/em> The ideal of \u201che studies [the Lord\u2019s] teaching day and night\u201d (v. 2) was also part of Joshua\u2019s appointment as leader (Josh. 1:8), and, in slightly different words, a part of laws in the book of Deuteronomy (there, 6:7). The tree that\u2019s planted by the waters, as a metaphor for a righteous person is mentioned also in Jeremiah (17:8). And the whole situation of the just deserts to the righteous and the wicked is a topic that is ever-present, from Genesis through Job and beyond.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. \u201cAshrei<\/em>\u201d (blessed, happy, fortunate) at the beginning and the end. The word ashrei<\/em> opens Psalm 1 and closes Psalm 2. That is one of the reasons that some people see these two psalms as essentially one composition.
